IKGA Canada holds or supports events that are congruent with its objects.
The I.K.G.A. Canada National Camp (previously known as Annual Camp) is usually held in summer or early fall. The agenda typically includes training sessions, coaching and refereeing clinics, dan and kyu gradings, and all sorts of other training. Social activities are also planned, as well as the final banquet where promotion announcements are made. The location and the number of training sessions for the camp vary from year to year. Karateka from all of the I.K.G.A. Canada dojos are usually in attendance at this large annual celebration of our Association. Every several years, Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi and other Japanese guest instructors are invited.
Along with general classes, some of the events that are featured at camp include goju specific training, goju breathing classes, question and answer periods, kata and kumite practice, demonstration, and lectures on special topics.
The University of Alberta Gojukai Karate Club hosts an annual Winter Camp during Reading Week in February. Training includes all the regular things, and can include the 100 Kata Challenge, the 1000 punch challenge, ice breaking, mental training, lectures, sanchin on the frozen lake, and the always popular assortment of Silly Sensei Tricks.
The U of A Gojukai Karate Club has made the camp open to all members. We encourage every member to make an effort to attend this camp... it is a fantastic training opportunity.
This event includes the tournament, a training seminar and a lot of good times meeting karate acquaintances from other countries. I.K.G.A. Canada has sent representatives to all Gojukai World Championships since the first one, and it will be sending representatives to the Fifth I.K.G.A. World Championships in 2009. The delegation will be made up of country representative, coaches, competitors, and other participants and supporters. The tournament portion is sure to attract some of the best competitors in the Gojukai world.
The training seminar after the tournament is run by Goshi Yamaguchi Saiko Shihan, with the assistance of other high ranking instructors. All members are invited to participate in the training seminar, which is always a lot of fun for all levels.
Members of IKGA Canada periodically make a training trip to Japan. Some of these trips were for invited special events such as the 50th Anniversary of the Gojukai and others are arranged solely for the benefit of the members.
Those interested in travelling to Japan for training are encouraged to check with their Sensei for the proper procedure and a letter of authorization from headquarters.
The Gojukai is a large association, and if a member of IKGA Canada is traveling to another country with a Gojukai affiliation, they are encouraged to arrange for a courtesy visit, or even some training. This is done through IKGA Canada headquarters.
